Change Needs To Happen
If you have not listened to the the Ted Talk "I've lived as a man and a woman. Here's what I learned" by Paula Stone then you need to do that immediately. Paula Stone a transgender women who perfectly explains her experience transitioning from a man to a women and what she has learned along the way. She states that she did not know her privilege when she was a man because she never had to live as a women. When she transitioned she realized that privilege. I think that is so important because though we may not know what it is like to be a man or a women we are getting a prospective of how important it is for us as a society to treat everyone as equals.
It breaks my heart to read that in a 2016-2017 Siena Student Climate Survey it was reported that 100% of Siena transgender students expressed that they had personally experienced bias/harassment/discrimination at our college. When students go to a college they are expecting and should be guaranteed a safe space to be fully who they are while getting a wholesome education free from judgement. No matter who someone is or how someone identifies we should all be granted the same respect and equality in all opportunities available to students. I think that Siena college has a great amount of work to do in regards to ensuring that all students are getting the experience free from bias/harassment and discrimination. I thought that the ted talk that I discussed above is one that everyone should watch. It provides insight into both sides of a man and women while showing a prospective into what it is like to be transgender. Though this is just one persons experience I think that it hits on how we can all use our power to help each other. I also think that their needs to be more education on the topic. It should be colleges job to ensure that all students feel as though they are free to be 100 percent who they are. Educating our school is crucial to moving forward in cultivating a safe and more inclusive campus.

Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteI like how you phrased your first paragraph. The privilege was only seen by Paula after viewing life from a completely different aspect. I think this is so important because it depicts how varying social problems are not even understood or thought about by some people until they experience them firsthand.
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou mention that you think there needs to be more education on this topic. What do you have in mind specifically? How can our college do better to ensure that students feel free to be who they are?
