After doing the reading by Julia Serano I was very interested in how she shared her experiences living both as a men and women. It actually reminded me a lot of the Ted talk that we watched by Paula Stone Williams in the beginning of the semester. One of the main points that I think Serano hits is that transgender women are very marginalized in our society due to the fact that there is such a dominant male culture within our society. If you nail ask too much like a female he is deemed weird. This may mean in the way he acts, dresses, or in the way he speaks. If a woman acts to manly she could be looked at as weird as well. So for a transgender woman our culture makes it very hard for them to express fully who Who they want to be. Both Serano and Williams discuss how transgender women are not properly portrayed to the world. There are many women and male activist out there who are not in support of transgender woman. Serano believes that we need to fight for everyone’s rights that we ne...

How Do They Differ from Other Authors?

Image
While reading Asta’s work I found it hard to understand at some points and found that I was slightly confused. However, after reading her work I think that she is trying to argue that gender is something that we are born with and not something that our society has created. Many of the other authors that we have read have argued that gender is created by our society. In other terms that we are not born with a gender and rather that our surroundings are what helps us identify ourselves and in turn create a gender. Asta argues that married people are normally legally married but some people who are not married and call themselves married even though it is not legal. Meaning that society is going to say they are not married and the perception of how we identify ourselves is great but people are going to treat you how they perceive you to be. I struggle with this concept as I am not fully convinced this is accurate. I think that I agree with some of the other authors that we read that gende...

Gender

Image
After reading Judith Butler's "Proformative Acts and Gender Constitution" article it made me think about the role in which gender plays in our lives. It makes me wonder if gender is something that we as a society have defined or are we defining it by our biological bodies. I am of the opinion that our society has created what gender is. We set gender roles from a young age just with color. We expect that if a women is pregnant and having a male that the color associated is blue and if she is having a female that the color is pink. Our society tells us that girls play with barbies and guys play with action figures. This also goes with the way both men and women dress. Our society tells us that if women do not wear ball gowns and dresses and rather tries to wear a suit they are less of a women. This makes me so frustrated as and article of clothing, a color or even a toy should not define what is more "manly" or "womanly". America has put way to much e...

Change Needs To Happen

Image
If you have not listened to the the Ted Talk " I've  lived as a man  and a  woman . Here's what I learned" by Paula Stone then you need to do that immediately.  Paula Stone a transgender women who perfectly explains her experience transitioning from a man to a women and what she has learned along the way. She states that she did not know her privilege when she was a man because she never had to live as a women. When she transitioned she realized that privilege. I think that is so important because though we may not know what it is like to be a man or a women we are getting a prospective of how important it is for us as a society to treat everyone as equals.      It breaks my heart to read that in  a 2016-2017 Siena Student Climate Survey it was reported that 100% of Siena transgender students expressed that they had personally experienced bias/harassment/discrimination at our college.  When ...

We are all Family

Image
When you think about what a “traditional” family in America looks like a vision comes to mind and based on your age or where you are in your life this may look different. However, When you google “traditional family” the definition that appears is  “ a family structure that consists of a man, woman, and one or more of their biological or adopted children. In most traditional families, the man and woman are husband and wife.” I think the fact that we can put the words “traditional Family” into google and this appears is concerning.      For so many years their is this notion that a family is supposed to look and be a certain way and this could not be further from the truth. Families are not always built this way. Their are many families that are single parent households, homosexual households and children who are biological or adopted. Some core family structures include the grandparents and or other relatives or even friends. I think that re...

Rousseau and Education

Image
Childhood education was pushed forward when philosopher Rousseau claimed that women and men should not be treated the same in terms of education. He believes that both men and women are equal yet, men and women do not possess the same biological traits meaning that they should not be treated the same way in school. Rousseau believes that his way of teaching both men and women should be viewed as equal in a way and that the way women are treated in school is no less or greater then how the men are treated in school.        In the text Rousseau explained that men are seen as strong individuals while women are weak and supposed to be submissive. Today these social norms are still something that is said. We use these words to describe women and to me it seems to limit them. As we have come so far from Rousseau's harsh beliefs we also have a long way to go. Women in the country now are not viewed as such in school yet, our society still will say t...

Is it more liberating to regard sexual orientation as something one is born with or as something that develops over time?

Image
Our world likes to define everything and or find an answer or solutions to things that maybe do not need solutions or answers. By trying to find answers or solutions we are making it a fact and I do not think that putting pressures on situations and or people is healthy. It creates rigged restrictions and ways in which to think that are not necessarily what our society should rest its hat on. We are a world that is forever changing and evolving. So as I think about the question weather or not it is more liberating to regard sexual orientation as something one is born with or as something that develops over time? I find it very hard to answer. On one hand I think our society for many years has come up with an answer  that sexual orientation  is something  that one is born with rather then it being something  that is developed  over time weather by environment or social situations  or just a better understanding  of oneself. As a straight female I...
